It has been a week since the devastating Earthquake and Tsunami that has affected the people of my home country of Japan. Thankfully my family and friends are all ok, but many have lost loved ones and have been left homeless, cold, and hungry. As the first and only player to play in MLS from Japan I feel a responsibility to ask all fans of soccer and anyone reading this blog to please donate what ever you can to the red cross and their relief effort. Every little bit helps. – Kosuke Kimura

The American Red Cross will be featured as the Nonprofit of the Match on March 19

Commerce City, Colo. — The American Red Cross Mile High Chapter will be featured as the Colorado Rapids “Nonprofit of the Match” during the Rapids’ opening match on Saturday, March 19 against Portland Timbers at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.

Governor John Hickenlooper has proclaimed March “Red Cross Month.” In honor of Red Cross Month, the Rapids will donate $5 to the Red Cross for every ticket purchased in a special Red Cross Supporters Section at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park during the Rapids’ match on March 19.

PURCHASE: CLICK HERE TO BUY TICKETS THAT SUPPORT THE RED CROSS EFFORTS.

Kroenke Sports Charities will also be collecting donations throughout the match to assist the American Red Cross’s disaster relief efforts to help those affected by the earthquake in Japan and tsunami throughout the Pacific. Fans can also contribute by visiting Redcross.org or texting REDCROSS to 90999 to donate $10 from a phone to support American Red Cross emergency and disaster relief efforts. On those rare occasions when donations exceed American Red Cross expenses for a specific disaster, contributions are used to prepare for and serve victims of other disasters.

In addition to donating a portion of ticket sales to the Red Cross, Dick’s Sporting Goods Park is also hosting the Red Cross as it presents “Gabrielle Giffords Honorary Save-a-Life Saturday” on March 19. From 11 a.m.-2 p.m., the Red Cross will offer free, 45-minute trainings with instruction in hands-only CPR, controlling external bleeding and managing shock.

Anyone can sign up for the free classes at www.ColoradoRedCross.org/savealife.

Red Cross chapters are offering classes at more than 100 locations across the country on March 19 to honor Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and all those involved in the Tucson tragedy. During that event, several bystanders knew and employed CPR and First Aid skills, which helped save the lives of many victims, including Congresswoman Giffords. Find out more at www.ColoradoRedCross.org/savealife.

About the American Red Cross:
The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies nearly half of the nation’s blood; teaches lifesaving skills; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a charitable organization — not a government agency — and depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission.
